In Cooperation With

Quadricentennial Committee

Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Hudson Fulton Quadricentennial Committee wish to commission a piece of original music to mark the 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson's 3rd voyage and subsequent exploration of "The Hudson River" and the 200th Anniversary of Robert Fulton's successful adaptation of the steam engine as demonstrated by the voyage of the Clermont.
We have some general themes, which will be addressed below, but an important element of the commission is that the piece be crafted in consultation with our community, through means of at least one public workshop (preferably more).
General Themes:
The overriding theme is that of the Hudson River.  It was here before any of us and it will remain long after we are gone.  It has supported and sustained countless generations both physically and economically. We'd like our piece to consider the evolution of our relationship with "America's First River" during the last 400, where we've been and where we are going.
Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow are both celebrating a reconnection with the river as industrial sites are moved from the waterfront to make way for residential development and public access.  Both communities host sections of the Westchester County Riverwalk Park (Tarrytown's section will open in September of 2009) securing large-scale public waterfront access for the first time in many years.
We would like to address the achievements and impact of Henry Hudson and Robert Fulton as part of our evolving relationship with the river,
How the music will be used:
We intend to use our commission during our Quadricentennial Commemoration season running June – September of 2009.  In order that the music has a life after the 2009 season, we need the piece to be suitable for performance by a high school band/ ensemble/ chorus.  The piece should be as versatile as possible in arrangement so that it may be scaled up or down depending on available musicians and performance budget.  If words are used, they should be quickly grasped by the general public.
How the commission will be funded:
We intend to fund the commission through a combination of grants and civic funding (details available upon request).
