SATURDAY, JANUARY 15 at 7 PM
TERENCE MARTIN is “a Cadillac among Chevy-quality singer songwriters with a hook buried so deep you’ll never get it out” - Jim Motavalli, WPKN Radio
New York singer/songwriter and published poet Terence Martin’s Urban H2O show will feature songs from his new CD with Dan Bonis on mandolin, dobro & lap steel.
Terence was born in London and grew up in Los Angeles. He moved East in 1997 to become part of the flourishing NY acoustic music scene. His musical background includes performing as a double bassist in the Burbank Symphony and in several touring rock bands. Terence has shared the stage with an impressive line-up of national acts, including Rosanne Cash, Roger McGuinn, Christine Lavin, Dar Williams, and Richie Havens. He’s performed on the Most Wanted Stage at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, been a New Folk winner at the NJ Folk Festival, a finalist in the Mountain Stage New Song Contest, received honorable mention in the Mid Atlantic Song Contest for “East of the River” and performed at the Boston Folk Festival.
His new CD, The Last Black and White TV, charted #35 on the Americana Top 40 music Chart. His song, “Go Ask the Rain” from Even Trade, was selected for Best Song in the male singer songwriter category at the 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards. “Familiar Mysteries,” a song from Waterproof, was selected for the title track on the second CD from the Garland Appeal, the charity for breast cancer research started in mem ory of Linda McCartney and sanctioned by her husband Paul McCartney.
“Terence Martin’s use of metaphor and symbol are as finely writ as any serious novelist and stand on a peer footing with the work of Neil Young or Bob Dylan.” - John Hammel, Homegrown Radio
“An extraordinarily skillful writer whose powerful songs are impossible to forget.” - Charlie Blackfish, WUSB radio
OPEN BOOK has “the finest country/folk/rock harmonies since the Everly Brothers!” - Richard Cuccaro, Acoustic Live in NYC.
“Open Book’s songs build on Michele Rubin and Rick Gedney’s beautiful and entwining harmonies, achieving an incantatory power.” - Jim Motavalli, WPKN Radio
Rubin and Gedney grew up not far from each other in the Westchester suburbs of New York City. Rubin was “the chick with the guitar” at her high school who got married, had a daughter and sang at open mic nights in the area. Gedney, meanwhile, worked as a painter, got married and started a family while teaching guitar on the side. In 1999 the two singer-songwriters met at a coffeehouse after a show in which Rubin heard Gedney play mandolin. She asked him to work with her on some gigs as a sideman, and soon she was reciprocating with background vocals. Their musical relationship developed and, in turn, so did their personal journey together. The songs reflect their experiences: new beginnings, transition through divorce, and finding each other through music. The stories are all right there in the lyrics.
The group now regularly travels up and down the East Coast performing at much-loved listening rooms such as The Towne Crier, The Living Room, The Iron Horse Music Hall and now Urban H2O. They have shared the stage with the likes of Ellis Paul, Ian Matthews, Lucy Kaplansky, and Christine Lavin, among others.
“Their new CD, The Things We Keep, like its tuneful predecessor, 2002′s Out of Time, is an engaging amalgam of harmony vocals, tasty folk rock, and, most importantly, intelligent and astute songwriting.” - Mike Jurkovic, Chronogram Magazine
Tribes Hill’s monthly Song Circle brings together top local songwriters and performers for a spontaneous, joyous, musical exploration of the human experience. Urban H2O presents these rising Hudson Valley artists in an intimate and informal setting.
“We keep the circle unbroken” — Rick Rock, founder of Tribes Hill. “
“Tribes Hill is a vibrant part of the folk tradition.” –John Platt, host of WFUV’s “Sunday Breakfast” show
